The RES Special Education Team consists of three classrooms that are staffed by four professionally certified Special Education (SE) teachers who have a combined 125 years of experience in Special Education.  The SE Team is fortunate to have well-trained and experienced Educational Technicians who support them as well as the RES students who have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).  In addition to the core teaching staff/educational technicians, the RES SE Team includes a full-time professional Speech Pathologist as well as a district-wide Occupational Therapist and Special Education Social Worker. The SE team is knowledgeable in providing specially designed instruction to students who qualify in one of the fourteen areas identified by State/Federal Special Education laws.  Direct instruction in reading, math, written and spoken language, and behavior management in the special education classroom is the primary responsibility of the RES Special Education team.

The SE teachers also case manage a specific number of students assigned to them.  Case managers are responsible for ensuring that a child's IEP is implemented in all areas of the academic curriculum, speech/language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, developmental therapy, and social worker services.  They consult with the regular education staff about student needs and at times will co-teach with a regular education teacher when students with special needs are mainstreamed for academic instruction.  With permission from parents, they also connect with outside professionals who may be working with a child that they case manage.

The Special Education team believes that all children can learn and as much as possible, students with special needs should be mainstreamed with their peers in the regular education setting.  The collaborative atmosphere at Rumford Elementary School is dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible for the students they serve.

All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talent.
